after heatwave

2024-26

What happens after a heatwave, when tourist beaches and towns that live and breathe seasonal tourism are left empty?

After Heatwave continues my earlier series Heatwave, in which I documented beach life over four consecutive summers on the Slovenian and Croatian coast. Using a street photography approach, revealing the beach as a stage reflecting contemporary consumer society.

In After Heatwave I turn to the same locations outside the tourist season. The oversaturation and visual noise of summer give way to stillness. Seasonal structures and objects—once functional and overlooked—remain behind in a state of suspension. Stripped of their purpose, they become quiet topographical elements of a post-tourist landscape.

In this emptied environment, my attention shifts from human activity to absence. Familiar objects take on a new visual and symbolic presence. The atmosphere becomes almost meditative, yet subtly unsettling. This tension between calm and unease reflects a broader condition.

Through this continuation, the project explores cycles of use and abandonment, and reflects humanity’s balancing act between productivity and emptiness – suggesting a quiet, apocalyptic undertone within contemporary consumer culture.
